India Plans UPI Rules for AI Agents to Make Payments on Your Behalf
India is building the plumbing to let artificial intelligence tools initiate UPI payments on a user's behalf, with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) developing a new standard called the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP).
What is being proposed
As reported by Business Standard, the UAP would let AI-led "agentic" tools — think an AI assistant booking and paying for a cab, or automatically settling a recurring bill — carry out UPI transactions with minimal manual steps, while NPCI works with the payments industry to define how consent, limits and security checks would work. Notably, major digital payments companies reportedly decided against building a competing protocol of their own, choosing to work within the NPCI-led standard instead, which suggests broad industry buy-in on keeping this centralised.
Why this matters even before it launches
UPI is already enormous: monthly transaction volumes reached 22.71 billion in June 2026, processing a cumulative ₹28.92 trillion, per NPCI data. Layering AI agents on top of that scale raises real questions about fraud controls and accidental overspending that regulators will need to work through before any public rollout — worth watching if you rely on UPI daily.
