How this calculator works

Your true cost of acquiring a crypto position isn't just price × quantity — most exchanges charge a fee on both the buy and the sell. This calculator adds your buy fee to the cost basis and subtracts your sell fee from the proceeds, so the profit figure reflects what you actually pocketed, not a rough estimate.

The maths

Cost basis = (Buy price × Quantity) × (1 + Buy fee %)
Proceeds = (Sell price × Quantity) × (1 − Sell fee %)
Profit = Proceeds − Cost basis

Return on investment (ROI) is the profit expressed as a percentage of what you put in: ROI = Profit ÷ Cost basis × 100.

Worked example

You buy 0.5 BTC at $20,000 with a 0.5% exchange fee, then later sell at $60,000 with the same 0.5% fee. Cost basis = (20,000 × 0.5) × 1.005 = $10,050. Proceeds = (60,000 × 0.5) × 0.995 = $29,850. Profit = $19,800, an ROI of roughly 197%. At an estimated 15% tax rate, that's about $2,970 owed, leaving $16,830 after tax.

Crypto tax basics — read before you rely on this

Most countries that tax cryptocurrency treat a sale, a crypto-to-crypto trade, or spending crypto on a purchase as a taxable disposal — the gain (sale price minus cost basis) is what gets taxed, often at a different rate depending on how long you held the asset (short-term vs long-term). Some countries have no capital gains tax on personal crypto holdings at all; others tax every trade. This tool lets you plug in whatever rate applies to you, but it cannot know your country's actual rules — verify with your local tax authority or a crypto-savvy accountant before filing anything.

Limitations

This calculator models one buy and one sell of a single position. If you've bought the same coin multiple times at different prices (dollar-cost averaging), work out your average cost basis first — or use whatever cost-basis method (FIFO, LIFO, average cost) your tax authority requires — before entering a buy price here.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator include exchange fees?

Yes — enter your buy-side and sell-side fee percentage (check your exchange's fee schedule) and the calculator subtracts them from your cost basis and proceeds automatically.

Is the tax estimate accurate for my country?

No — this is a generic estimate using a tax rate you enter yourself. Real crypto tax rules vary enormously by country: some tax short-term and long-term gains differently, some exempt small gains, and some don't tax personal crypto gains at all. Always confirm the actual rate and rules with your local tax authority or an advisor.

What counts as a taxable event for crypto?

In most jurisdictions that tax crypto, selling for fiat, trading one crypto for another, and spending crypto on goods or services are all typically treated as disposals that can trigger a taxable gain or loss. Simply holding or transferring between your own wallets usually is not. Rules differ by country — verify locally.

Does it account for multiple purchases at different prices?

No — this tool models a single buy and a single sell. If you bought the same coin at several different prices, you will need to calculate your average cost basis (or use your exchange's cost-basis method, e.g. FIFO) before entering a buy price here.

Is this financial or tax advice?

No. This tool is for estimation and education only. Cryptocurrency is volatile and tax treatment varies by country — consult a qualified professional for advice specific to your situation.
