How Buy Now, Pay Later actually works
The most common BNPL structure — used by providers like Klarna and Afterpay for their "Pay in 4" product — splits a purchase into four equal installments, usually paid every two weeks, with no interest if every payment lands on time. Longer plans (6, 12 or even 24 months) work more like a traditional installment loan and often do carry an interest rate (APR), which this calculator lets you model too.
Where the hidden cost actually comes from
For a standard 0% Pay-in-4 plan paid on schedule, the total cost genuinely equals the sticker price — there's no markup. The real risk is a missed payment: providers differ, but a missed installment can trigger a flat late fee (commonly a few dollars up to a percentage of the order), and repeated misses can restrict your account or get reported to credit bureaus, which several major providers now do routinely for on-time payments too, not just defaults. This calculator lets you see exactly what one or more missed payments adds to your total.
Worked example
A $400 purchase split into 4 interest-free installments is $100 every two weeks — $400 total, no extra cost, if everything is paid on time. Miss just one payment with an $8 late fee and the total becomes $408 — a 2% markup for being a few days late. Compare that to a 12-month financing plan at 19.99% APR on a $1,000 purchase: installments of about $92.63/month, totalling roughly $1,111.60 — over 11% more than the sticker price, purely from interest.
Before you check out
Ask yourself three things: can I comfortably make every payment on the exact dates, is this a 0% plan or a financing plan with real interest, and am I about to stack multiple BNPL plans across different apps at once (a common way people lose track and miss payments)? If in doubt, compare the total cost here against simply saving up and paying once — see our Savings Goal Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Is Buy Now, Pay Later really interest-free?
The classic "Pay in 4" plans from providers like Klarna and Afterpay are usually 0% interest if you pay on schedule. Longer financing plans (6, 12 or 24 months) often do charge interest, sometimes a high APR — always check which type of plan you're being offered.
What happens if I miss a BNPL payment?
It depends on the provider. Some cap late fees at a small flat amount or a percentage of the order, others charge no late fee but restrict your account and block future purchases. Missed payments can also be reported to credit bureaus, which may affect your credit score.
Does using BNPL affect my credit score?
Increasingly, yes. Several major BNPL providers now report payment activity to credit bureaus, not just missed payments. Policies change often, so check the specific provider's current terms before assuming it has no effect on your credit file.
Is BNPL cheaper than a credit card?
For a short, on-time 0% Pay-in-4 plan, BNPL is usually cheaper than carrying a credit card balance, which accrues interest every month. For longer financing plans with an APR, compare the actual interest rate against your credit card's rate using this calculator before deciding.
Why would I use this instead of just checking the app?
BNPL checkouts are designed to make the small installment number look painless. This calculator shows the total cost across every payment plus any late fees, so you see the full picture — including what a single missed payment actually adds — before you commit.
