The tola was standardised under British rule at 180 grains (11.6638 g); jewellers subdivide it into masha and ratti, terms you will still hear in the Sarafa bazaar even though digital scales now read grams.
Worked example
A bride's set weighs 5 tola. Converted: 5 × 11.6638 = 58.32 grams (about 1.875 troy ounces). If the 24-karat rate is PKR 24,000 per gram, entering it shows the gold worth as roughly PKR 1.40 million — before making charges, and remember that 22-karat jewellery contains 91.6% gold, so its fair gold value is 0.916 of that. To sanity-check an international quote: divide the per-ounce dollar price by 2.667 to get a per-tola figure, then multiply by the exchange rate.
Gold and zakat
