Saudi Tax Authority Extends Penalty Waiver Through December

Saudi Arabia's Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) has extended its penalty-waiver programme for businesses with overdue tax filings or payments, giving late filers another six months to get compliant without facing fines.

What the extension covers

ZATCA announced that its Cancellation of Fines and Exemption of Financial Penalties Initiative runs for an additional six months starting 1 July 2026 and ending 31 December 2026. The initiative, which ZATCA has renewed several times since it was first introduced, generally waives penalties tied to late VAT registration, late filing, late payment and some VAT return corrections, provided the underlying tax itself is settled and returns are filed during the exemption window.

Why this is worth acting on, not just noting

Late filing penalties in Saudi Arabia can run from 5% to 25% of the tax due, a meaningful hit for a small business or freelancer operating on tight margins. For anyone with a VAT registration that has fallen behind — a common situation for new freelancers or small e-commerce sellers who registered but lost track of filing deadlines — this window is a low-cost opportunity to get current before penalties resume in the new year.
